PE BLOG : Girls Football Team Start with a Win!

St Johns 1 – 2 St Christopher

The St Christopher girls football team secured their first victory of the season with a narrow 2-1 away win at St Johns Primary School. Cheered on by parents and families the girls raced into a two goal lead at the break through two goals from striker Lily-Rose. The second half was a close affair with the home team putting the visitors under pressure but the defence marshalled by Kate, Tilly and Rosie held firm until the final whistle.

St Christopher – playing in royal blue – started the game very well creating early chances to score. Midfielders Evie and Erin combined well with striker Lily-Rose and a couple of chances to take the lead were denied by excellent blocks from the St John’s goalkeeper. The visitors defensive partnership of Kate and Tilly dealt very well with any attacks from the home team and this provided a solid platform for St Christopher to attack with increasing confidence. A few minutes later Lilly-Rose broke free to fire home a low shot into the bottom corner of the goal as St Christopher took the lead.

Evie and Erin were working incredibly hard in midfield as were  Kate and Tilly in defence. Mr Coyle sent on Rosie as a substitute for Tilly, and Mia replaced Erin to give the girls a rest. The fresh legs and energy of Mia and Rosie helped the whole team and Lily-Rose burst through onto a pass to score her second goal of the game making sure that away team got to half-time with a two goal cushion.

St Christopher began the second half with some lovely passing as they looked for more goals. Mia and Lily found good positions in the penalty area but just couldn’t find the final touch. As the game move into the last few minutes however St John pulled a goal back and St Christopher had to defend well with Kaycee pulling off a fine diving save to deny an equaliser. On the final whistle the home team thought they had beaten Kaycee with a fine low shot to equalise, but the ball had gone through the side netting into the goal.

At the final whistle both teams lined up and shook hands in a show of respect and sportsmanship to great applause from all of the parents.

Star Player – Kate, Tilly and Rosie all defended very well, Mia Erin and Evie all worked incredibly hard in midfield and Kaycee pulled of some great saves. However the work-rate and goals of Lily-Rose just shaded the star -player award for this match. Well played to everyone in the team.
