St Christopher’s cross-country relay teams enjoyed fantastic success at the Coventry Primary Schools relay races on Saturday morning. All three teams; the mixed team, the girls’ team and the boys’ team performed brilliantly with every team setting new school records. Nearly 40 Coventry primary schools had entered teams with hundreds of parents and family members cheering the children on as they ran the three quarters of a mile course in warm spring sunshine.

Mixed Relay Team

The first race of the day was the mixed team race. Rio was the first St Christopher runner of the day and it was fantastic to see him up with the leaders as he came into hand over to Rosie. Rosie raced away coming back to the finish with red, rosy cheeks and a huge smile. Oliver, cheered on by his proud granddad, excelled running a storming leg with a strong finish before sprinting over to the other side of the course to cheer on Kate who ran  leg 4 in great style sprinting up the small hill to the finish in 13th spot in a team time of 20 minutes 20 seconds. A school record for a mixed team!

Girls Race Relay

Next it was the turn of the girls. They were nervous but very excited as Elaine set of first running beautifully as she sprinted up the final climb to the finish and handed over to Kaycee. Kaycee worked incredibly hard and the last few metres were a real battle as she handed over to Neve. Neve bounded away running with a huge smile on her face as she kept the team in high up the midfield position for Hannah who stormed away overtaking lots of other schools to bring the team in 6th place – another school record – in a time of 19 minutes and 55 seconds. Another school record!

Boys Race Relay Team

The final race of the day was the boys’ race. Elliott ran the first leg for the boys race and crossed the line to hand over in 5th place overall. Lewys sprinted away from the start and maintained an excellent pace keeping the boys team in 5th place as he handed over to Daniel. Daniel – with Dad and Grandad keeping time for Mr Coyle – maintained the position as he handed over to George for the final leg. George ran a fantastic leg to bring the boys team home in 8th place – a school record – with an amazing overall time of 17 minutes & 39 seconds. The time set yet another school record!

Mrs Robinson was delighted proclaiming the children’s performance as the best year ever. Mr Tarn – who marshalled on the course – said he was proud to see how strong the St Christopher children were up amongst the leading teams in every race. It was also great to see our children rushing to support each other around the course in the different races.
